“All About the Book”
Happy National Poetry Month .. this is the first all-open reading of 2017, and it doesn’t appear that there will be another one until late summer.
“All About the Book” happens to be the title of the gallery’s April exhibition on book arts .. but a turn of the phrase got me thinking about .. the book that changed everything for us as writers, as poets.
So what is the book (or books) that changed your life, set you firmly on the path on which you now walk .. the one(s) that, above all, most made you want to become a writer?
Tell us all about those books, how you came upon them .. read us excerpts from them, either poetry or short fiction.. also bring your own poems which reference other people’s books .. poems about characters in someone’s book, poems about wanting to be in that book.
For instance, I love that Vince Gilligan’s script to the award-winning AMC series Breaking Bad contains countless references, both visual and literal, to Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass .. to the point that fans of the show were reading Walt’s poems to gain further insight into the episode they had just watched .. there’s little doubt in my mind what book changed Mr. Gilligan’s life.
William Butler Yeats, Ezra Pound, TS Eliot, Allen Ginsberg, Patti Smith .. and numerous others wrote poems about books that they loved.
Even if you don’t have a poem about a book, you certainly have a story to share about your favorite book, so absolutely bring it along with whatever you plan to read. And of course if you want to talk about book arts or the upcoming exhibition, have at it .. it’s all good!
Reception at 12:30pm, with light refreshments; this is an all open mic reading .. no featured author.
